Emma Payne’s work look at the role of the mould within the slip casting process. Emma has always been interested in the concept of the individual and its relationship to the mass produced as well as the hand made. Through exploring the process of slip casting she has managed to reinvent the mould, producing a modular mould that produces 256 individual objects when cast.
The use of gold lustre glaze is a reference to the Japanese tradition of repairing broken ceramics with gold lacquer. This practice increased the value of the object as well as the attachment between the owner and object through the creation of a narrative. Emma wanted to incorporate this idea into her work, through the use of the gold lustre on the negative flat areas created while casting. The Gold lustre highlights the unique areas within each vase and created an individual pattern on each vase that emphasizes the differences between each vase.
