Course Details
This course addresses contemporary approaches to branding, advertising and graphic design and explores these through a range of different media and processes. Key design industry practitioners contributed to the development of this course so that the methodologies taught and explored reflect as closely as possible current working practices. There is a need for a constant process of review and evaluation in order to maintain an awareness of emerging trends within the fast moving world of communication design and as result the course curriculum is regularly updated.
This course is aimed at students who wish to study branding, advertising and graphic design with a strong practical and vocational focus, engaging with real professional contexts through work-based learning and work placement. This course is at the forefront of the development of innovative approaches to work based learning within Higher Education.
This takes various forms:
1. A ‘Simulated Design Studio’. The studio that the students work in resembles as closely as possible a professional work environment. Students work in teams and develop presentation and communication skills.
2. Students also take part in visits to design studios such as Bibliotheque, Value & Service, North and Bear.
3. Live Projects. Students take real design jobs through to production while on the course. Clients have included University of the Arts London, the Federation of Irish Societies, Creative Camberwell and the Camberwell Arts Festival. Students also work on simulated live projects delivered by design companies, including branding consultants Moving Brands.
4. Work Placements. Students are required to complete a work placement or live project. The following studios have provided placements for the students: Bear; Vogue; Marmalade; TwoByTwo; Dazed & Confused; 300 Million; Kino; R Design; Coley Porter Bell; FiveFootSix; Front Magazine; Point Blank; Creative Leap and Browns.
