Discipline harnesses every extravagant gesture, if without extinguishing all traces of the initial impulse that may have set the creative process in motion. On the one hand, spontaneity is thereby subordinated to control; on the other, insertions of apparently crude or astonishing elements counteract rationality without eliminating it entirely.
