I intend for my paintings to be unrealistic but believable in an attempt to provoke a deeper investigation in the subject matter. I am especially interested in the idea of collective identities, issues of gender and the tension between the individual (freedom) and collective (oppression) in society.

Staged groupings of people are part of the imagery that intrigues me at the moment. We are all hard-wired to analyse social settings. The ambiguity of the personalities (how real are they?) and the suspense of not-knowing how they relate are an invitation to decode.

The image of the lone individual driving a car is the complete opposite to these group portraits. It evokes the rebellious atmosphere of the road movie, but muted by the family car and a lush English park road. The possibility of absolute freedom already contained.
