My main area of interest in photography lies around the relationship between the photographer and the object. As I see my images consisting of portraits, be they of people or things, I have grown interested in how we see portraiture, and its various possibilities. We are accustomed to understanding them as pathways into the sitter’s persona, showing us something of their soul. My approach to this is slightly different, as my main area of interest is not so much the sitter, or the subject matter, but rather that vast area in between them and the camera. So the portraits in my series are not images trying to reveal the sitter, but rather examining the space that is impassable and restricted, that remains in-between, keeps us at bay, and therefore makes us utterly human in its alienation. No camera equipment can trespass this element of silence that exists between one person and another.
